Reviews from last weeks mini tour!
Village Voice
"an emphatically vivacious Icelandic folk singer named Ólöf Arnalds"
Stereogum
"Ólöf Arnalds makes a lot happen with very few ingredients: The Icelandic singer/songwriter uses her pristine voice and an instrument or two to conjure a strange, mysterious world (I imagine fields, brooks, old stones, ivy)"
Time Out New York
"Take a listen to “Klara” and it’s easy to hear why Arnalds’s work has drawn such distinguished fans."
Brooklyn Vegan
"Though her songs are folkie, she had a lot of energy and the volume was up, and Bjork had just been on stage, and Olof talks just like Bjork and she was great and the crowd was way into it."
Vanity Fair

The Tripwire
"From the minute she came on stage, they owned it as if it was their own living room."
Quiet Color
"Ólöf’s performance was very similar to her personality. Her stage presence is engaging and enchanting. Her demeanor is refreshing and off the cuff which made for a very lively and enjoyable show."
Free Williamsburg
"Last night, I was fortunate to check out the Ólöf Arnalds show at the Scandinavia house. I say fortunate because I had never had a chance to see the Icelandic songstress live and it was by far one of my favorite shows this year."

Við Og Við - #38 on our Best of 2007
“...every bit the modern-day troubadour as sat with guitar in hand and sang simple, perfectly beautiful songs that reflected the frigid and blustery landscapes of her native Iceland. Her traditional, folkloric set stunned the quiet crowd.....like a clear, crystal bell, Arnalds’ voice and a multitude of guitars in varying shapes and sizes remained central throughout the set....Olaf's young son awoke during her set, crying out for his mom, and she finally resorted to singing him a lullaby that lulled him and the audience back into a peaceful sense of calm.”
eMusic: Andy Battaglia
Ólöf Arnalds plays a gentle brand of folk music that won’t strike anyone with a soft spot for Vashti Bunyan or Joanna Newsom as unfamiliar; her songs have an unusual way of freezing out the external world during the few graced minutes in which they’re alive. Arnalds is all about subtle moments of breath-taking, stop-you-in-your-tracks beauty, and none of them owes to more than the simple aggregation of voice and guitar. Sometimes it’s a lute or something else with strings, but the general pattern remains the same.”
New York Decieder:
“Olof Arnalds is an alternately delicate and devastating folk singer from Iceland with a light touch and a heavy presence. She's worked on lots of different kinds of stuff and sung in groups like Mum, but her striking album Vio Og Vio measures in as something closer to Vashti Bunyan and Joanna Newsom. That's to say: wispy, melodic, sun-speckled, and sly. Her voice is a marvel, as is her guitar-playing, which is dexterous and finger-pick-intensive.”
Time Out NY:
“...gentle, rustic tunes”
Brooklyn Vegan:
“kind of an Icelandic Joanna Newsom”
CMJ
“....the music spoke for itself with Ólöf Arnalds’s distinct voice ringing out over plucked guitars and an occasional soft drumbeat or piano accompaniment. In an impressive feat, she even managed to get the crowd singing along at one point...”
Flavorpill NYC
“Arnalds is a fan of the musically esoteric (she plays a mean wine glass)”
Bio -
Icelandic folk chanteuse Ólöf Arnalds has been a prominent figure in her native music scene for several years playing with Múm, Mugison, and Skúli Sverrisson. Ólöf has also been active in mixing aural and visual arts, taking a solo turn in and providing hypnotic vocals for Steingrímur Eyfjörð's video contribution to the 2007 Venice Biennial. The piece also won the 2008 Icelandic Visual Arts Award. Her University graduating musical video piece Eins og sagt er ( or "As they say” in English) has also been exhibited widely.
However, it is Ólöf's solo debut Við og Við that continues to garner widespread acclaim. Produced by Kjartan Sveinsson from Sigur rós, it won Best Alternative Album at the Iceland Music Awards as well as Record of the Year at Iceland's largest daily newspaper, Morgunblaðið.
2008 saw Ólöf play festivals throughout Europe. Highlights include sharing a three-way bill with Björk and Sigur Rós at Iceland's Náttúra concert, and opening for Björk in Athens, Greece. In September, Ólöf performed a sold out showcase at NYC's Le Poisson Rouge that was featured as the music pick for the day in the New York Times UrbanEye, Time Out New York, The Onion, and Flavorpill. The show in which Ólöf debuted Við og Við in full was the subject of a Dig For Fire TV documentary. In October, Ólöf became the first Icelandic musician to play a prestigious showcase slot at WOMEX, the world music expo.
Ólöf has just finished recording her second album which was once again produced by Kjartan Sveinsson from Sigur Rós.
